‘There is so much more to it than just sports’
- Student stories
Student Liam Prior is half Irish and half American. He is in his second year of Physiotherapy. It was scary to move to another country, but it is one of the best decisions he has ever made.
‘I chose Groningen because it was recommended to me by a family friend. They told me what a nice place Groningen is and how interactive the Physiotherapy programme is. Unlike those in Ireland, it is easier to get into the course and it is a lot more practical which suits my learning style much better.’
‘My favourite course so far has been anatomy. At the start learning only the first few muscles feels as though you are staring up at Everest. However, by the third block, I and others I spoke to really started to better understand how the body works. Suddenly, being tasked with learning over 60 muscles became a very doable task.’
‘The balance between practical work and theory is about 60/40 towards the practical side. The practical element of this programme builds on the theoretical foundation. This is really refreshing as sitting in front of a screen all day is not a reality in this course. Lecturers and supervisors are always open to answering questions in lectures or via email. They are all really supportive, but at the end of the day you have to put the effort in, as they cannot do that for you.’
‘I love sports and love helping people. I took that information and looked at jobs that can accommodate such things and found Physiotherapy. However, since joining the course I have realised there is so much more to it than just sports. The first junior internship under a physiotherapist’s supervision, helping someone with their complaint was incredibly fulfilling which I hope to experience many more times in my professional career. I’m very grateful that we already have this opportunity in the first year.’
‘I love living in Groningen. There is always something happening and it is very much a student city. It is cosy while having everything from fresh markets to beautiful parks and good places to go out with friends. It is always lively in the city of Groningen. My advice would be to take the leap and go for it. Undoubtedly, it is scary moving to another country to study, but it has been one of the best decisions I have made. Come and see for yourself.’
