'The 'Kaia' project is about a great challenge and an incredibly complicated theme: CO2. The research is about the development of new sustainable CO2 filters using algae, specifically the species diatoms. By using the object CO2 is absorbed and through photosynthesis oxygen is released again. After two months, the object can be harvested and with the end product (biomass, for example) new materials, such as biodiesel or even glass, can be made.'

'A design would never have succeeded for me, if, in the final product, we had only taken from nature, exhausted nature. We must find a way to give back to nature in new developments. This can be done by thinking ahead of the development process about how you could make a product CO2 neutral or CO2 negative, but you could also develop products that enter into a symbiotic relationship between humans and products, in which nature is also involved.'
