The Hanze Language & Culture Centre (HLCC) offers a wide range of courses in languages and cultures for anyone interested in improving their language skills and/or cultural competences. You can choose from several language courses at multiple levels, and it is also possible to take a culture module or full minor. Many courses are especially suitable for international students.

Location and costs
All Hanze Language & Culture Centre courses take place at Zernikeplein 7 in Groningen.
- For Hanze students, there are no costs for course participation.
- For exchange students and RuG students, the cost is €350 per course.*
- For other students, the cost is €480 per course.
*If the course is included in the Erasmus programme, exchange students don't have to pay a fee.
CEFR language levels
We use the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) to describe language levels. This is an international standard that helps you understand your current level and track your progress. There are six levels, from beginner to advanced:
Basic user

A1 (Beginner): You can use simple words and phrases and have basic conversations.

A2 (Elementary): You can communicate in everyday situations about familiar topics.
Independent user

B1 (Intermediate): You can manage most everyday situations and talk about experiences and plans.

B2 (Upper intermediate): You can communicate clearly and interact comfortably with others.
Proficient user
- C1 (Advanced): You can use language fluently for study or work.
- C2 (Proficiency): You understand and use the language almost like a native speaker.
NUT quality label
The Hanze Language & Culture Centre is a member of the Association of Dutch and Flemish University Language Centres (NUT). The Language & Culture Centre satisfies all quality criteria set by the association and has therefore received the NUT quality label.
