From Student Project to Steam Release: The Journey of Blimpy
- Student project
What began as a simple Game Lab assignment quickly grew into something much bigger. The project started as Turbo Taskforce, a collaboration with HARD, a team building autonomous race cars. The students were asked to create visuals for HARD’s website but instead, they pitched a co-op building and driving game where players work together to assemble and race electric cars, mirroring how HARD’s real team operates.
The prototype was a success, earning praise from both the client and lecturers. “HARD actually used our game to showcase their work,” the team says. “That’s when we realized we’d made something really fun.” The project went on to win three awards at the CMGT student festival.
A year later, the team decided to bring the concept to life commercially. Reworking the art, expanding the gameplay, and adding online multiplayer, they transformed Turbo Taskforce into Blimpy, a chaotic, cooperative puzzle-racer.
With support from Not Final Games, the team launched a Steam page and continued development as part of their graduation project. Blimpy is now in active development, with the team seeking funding to bring their first commercial release to life.
