‘A neighborhood clean-up event plan: The most socially rewarding project of my degree’
- Student project
Aron Hinders, a student from the Netherlands, graduated from Hanze University in July 2025. For his graduation assignment, he chose to work with Viako, a social cleaning company that provides employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Aron developed a research-based communication strategy to support and strengthen Viako’s mission.
‘The client challenged me to analyze their current stakeholder network and provide actionable communication products that reflect their inclusive vision. At the time, Viako was struggling to express its social mission clearly to key partners such as municipalities, reintegration agencies, and prospective employees. The goal was to improve their strategic visibility and credibility as an inclusive employer, through both physical and digital means. This required that the strategy translate insights into concrete, usable tools for diverse audiences. The project began with a comprehensive context and audience analysis. Accessibility and cultural sensitivity were key, given the audience’s specific needs and context.’
‘The outcome consisted of five interlinked products, but the most inspiring is the neighborhood clean-up event plan that brings together the entire community to improve public spaces. These events aim to collect at least 300 kg of litter while engaging with local organizations and sponsors, creating a visible impact on sustainability, social inclusion, and neighborhood well-being. For the next edition, the 22 March 2026, for the Dutch Landelijke Opschoondag (National Cleanup Day), they have asked me to handle the marketing beforehand and to create social media content and general footage on the day itself. Together, these deliverables are contributing to a cohesive strategy that positioned Viako for consistent and value-driven communication.’
‘The client responded very positively to both the process and the results. They described the products as “strategically grounded but hands-on,” which was exactly the goal. Academically, the project was also graded highly, specifically the integration of intercultural insights and data-driven design. Overall, both the professional and academic reception confirmed the impact and relevance of the work, which made me more confident as a junior communication professional entering the job market.’
‘Looking back, the Viako project stands out as one of the most formative experiences in my academic journey. It allowed me to apply research skills to a socially urgent context, deepening my understanding of accessibility, empathy, and real-world impact. This experience confirmed my interest in policy creation and ethical communication. Combined with my studies in Japan and internship in Barcelona, I realized I want to work in an international environment where these values are central. That’s what this programme is about: exploring different areas of interest and then putting the puzzle together using your favorite pieces.’
