İhsan Engin Bal is Professor of Structural Safety and Earthquakes. His research focuses on earthquake-resistant construction, digitalisation in the building industry and environmentally friendly structures.
As a civil engineer with a master’s and doctoral degree in earthquake engineering, he was responsible for numerous projects on the design and strengthening of structures against seismic loads in Greece, Turkey and the United States. He was also a researcher and participated in international (FP7) and nationally funded research projects.
Prior to his current position, İhsan led research and development projects at Istanbul Technical University. His work focused on topics such as the production and testing of seismic isolation systems, the assessment and strengthening of historical masonry buildings and the seismic monitoring of structures.
İhsan Bal was a consultant for historical buildings for the Turkish Ministry Vakiflar and the Scientific Committee for the Protection of Historical Heritage of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. He coordinated seismic monitoring activities and was a design consultant for leading projects such as the Eurasia Road Tunnel and the Marmaray Project in Istanbul. He is also professor of Digital Technologies in the Built Environment at the RUG.
