Wytze van der Gaast is professor Economic Issues within the Energy Transition, a research area within Entrance - Centre of Expertise Energy of the Hanze.
Wytze focuses his research on various economic challenges, including creating fair pricing and cost-effective solutions for renewable energy. He also develops innovative financing models that stimulate both public and private investment and he investigates how market structures can be adapted to facilitate the integration of new technologies. Wytze graduated from the University of Groningen in 1993 as a general economist, after which he started working at JIN Climate & Sustainability. In 2015, Wytze obtained his PhD with a thesis on “International Climate Negotiations”. He is involved in the National Carbon Market Foundation, which issues CO2 certificates to Dutch climate projects.

Professorship Legal and Economic Issues within the Energy Transition
Within this professorship, we look at the following issues:
- What are economic incentives for renewable energy?
- How do energy suppliers and customers come together in the market and how is this regulated legally and economically? In other words, how does the energy system work?
- What are legal preconditions in the energy transition, such as ownership, security and environmental law?
- How do we translate all this into policy?
