Nienke Heijes is designer, researcher and maker. In September 2025, she started her PhD at the Professorship Art & Sustainability (part of Research Centre Art & Society, Hanze) in collaboration with the University of Groningen.
In her research project Wat kan ik straks nog maken? (What can I still make in the future?), she explores the way historical functional design, local materials and contemporary design practices can contribute to future regenerative design practices.
From a background in biology (UG) and interior design (KABK), Nienke connects local societal issues to craftmanship, traditions and innovation. Next to her research, she is involved in education at Minerva Art Academy, and the Fiber Research Lab that she initiated.
