Nienke Heijes is an artistic PhD candidate at the Professorship Art & Sustainability, part of Hanze's Research Centre Art & Society, in collaboration with the University of Groningen.
In her research project, ’What can I still make in the future?’ (Wat kan ik straks nog maken?), she explores the processes of making and designing in a world challenged by climate change. By unravelling the material and manufacturing processes of a woven linen tablecloth and collaborating with contemporary makers and designers, her research will contribute to future regenerative design practices.
With a background in biology (UG) and interior architecture (KABK), Nienke combines ecology and design with craftmanship, tradition and innovation. In addition to her research, she is a lecturer in Design and Art at Minerva Art Academy, and she founded and runs the Fiber Research Lab.
