Idiocultural music lessons for newcomers in primary education
- Research project
“What does it ask of you to teach music to young children who have fled their home country?” With this research, we aim to draw attention to a question that is not often asked of (future) music teachers. The study takes place at a primary school for newcomers, where lecturers and students from the Music Education programme at the Prince Claus Conservatorium develop music lessons.
The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of what is required from music teachers to provide music education in this context in order to better prepare them to teach young refugees.
Our research is based on the idea that music education should center on the personal connections children have with music, both positive and negative, as this better reflects the diversity of both music and children. This approach is rooted in the concept of idiocultural music education, developed by Professor of Arts Education Evert Bisschop Boele. A second guiding principle of the research is that teaching music to young refugees requires a high level of sensitivity from the music teacher to the vulnerable context in which the music lesson takes place.
