'My goal is to create sustainable impact.'
- Research project
Eske Freessemann (26) studies in Hanze’s Sustainable Energy Master. She is working on a thesis to create standards for ports that want to bunker ships with methanol. It is a key step toward greener shipping. She expects to complete her studies later this year.
'Sustainability has played a central role since the beginning of my studies. In my bachelor’s research I focused on wind propulsion in shipping, where I first explored how technical innovations can contribute to climate protection. With my master’s thesis, I am building on this theme again, but this time from a different perspective.
My research focuses on the use of methanol as an alternative fuel in shipping and on developing the standards and regulations needed for ports to bunker ships safely. I look at the technical requirements, safety systems, and broader regulations ports must consider, combining my interest in technology with a commitment to sustainability. My goal is to contribute to a project that is both practical and impactful.
This work addresses a key gap in the maritime energy transition: uniform regulations for methanol bunkering are lacking. Without them, shipping companies hesitate to convert vessels, and ports are reluctant to invest in infrastructure. My research aims to break this deadlock by proposing safe and reliable processes for methanol bunkering.
I conduct my thesis in Germany under the guidance of my Hanze professor, collaborating closely with my project group and international experts. This diverse community brings together academic knowledge, practical experience, and global perspectives. Although the research takes place abroad, my time in Groningen, including visits to the ports of Eemshaven and Delfzijl and engagement with initiatives like New Energy for Groningen, has been a strong source of inspiration.
Beyond technical insights, the project has helped me grow personally. I have become more efficient, confident in conducting interviews, and proactive in using feedback. Ultimately, my thesis lays the groundwork for safe methanol bunkering and contributes to the sustainable transformation of the shipping industry.'
