Sustainability

Sustainability is one of the pillars within the Research Centre for Built Environment NoorderRuimte. For us, sustainability is a basic prerequisite. Through applied research, we make a meaningful contribution to a sustainable physical living environment.

Designers and decision-makers play a key role in making the built environment more sustainable. They make important choices to transform existing villages, neighbourhoods and buildings towards Net Zero Energy, to generate energy from renewable sources and to use resources more efficiently. Residents and property owners are also increasingly taking the initiative to implement measures individually or collectively.

In addition to measures that help slow down global climate change (mitigation), actions are also being taken to adapt the built environment to its effects (adaptation), such as flooding and heatwaves. In light of these important developments, our (re)designs must be sustainable.
