In loving memory of Sabrina Vlaskalic, 1989 – 2019
Classical guitarist, teacher, founder of the Dutch Guitar Foundation, PhD-student
Prins Claus Conservatorium en Dutch Guitar Foundation

Groningen, January 24th 2019  - To remember our beloved colleague Sabrina Vlaskalic
the Prince Claus Conservatoire of the Hanze UAS and the Dutch Guitar Foundation organise a memorial concert on Saturday February 2nd at 5 PM at the Prince Claus Conservatoire in Groningen. The concert is free and everybody is welcome to attend.

We are busy putting the programme together, but we can already let you know that the Volos Guitar Trio will come to Groningen for this occasion. The Volos Guitar Trio consists of the guitarists Costas Cotsiolis, Aniello Desiderio and Zoran Dukic. All three have played a big role in Sabrina's musical growth and they were very important to her.

Sabrina died in a traffic accident in Groningen on Thursday January 17th. She will be buried on Saturday January 26th at 1:30 PM in her city of birth Belgrade (Serbia).

Sabrina was a dear colleague and an extremely talented musician. We knew her as an inspiring and committed teacher who was invaluable to her students. She started her teaching career in 2012 and has built up a large guitar class. Students from all over the world have come to Groningen with one goal: study with her. The energy and care that she gave her students has left an indelible impression on them and their grief is immense.

Sabrina was the driving force behind the Dutch Guitar Foundation. No plan was too crazy, no idea was too big. She had a mission: to give classical guitar the place it deserves in the Netherlands and far beyond. Because of her endless energy, perseverance and fighting spirit the foundation has succeeded in putting Groningen on the global map as a guitar city.

In 2018 Sabrina, together with her team, organised a very successful first edition of the European Guitar Concerto Competition & Festival. Even more harsh is that the second edition would have started on January 28th. The Foundation has decided to postpone it until further notice. But it will definitely happen. Sabrina would not have wanted it any other way.

Apart from being a teacher and having the leading role in the Dutch Guitar Foundation, Sabrina was busy with her PhD at the Guildhall School of Music. She would have completed her study this year and was very much looking forward to wearing the robe.

Apart from this all, she travelled the world to give concerts, organise masterclasses and be a jury member at festivals. On the morning of her death she announced that she would perform during the Guitar Foundation of America Convention in Indianapolis in June 2020. She was over the moon.

That she has left an unforgettable impression shows from the many condolences on her Facebook page, the crowdfunding which makes it possible for her students to attend the funeral, the scholarship that has been dedicated to her by the International Guitar Research Centre Conference in Hong Kong and various compositions that have been written for her.

There is a memorial room in the Prince Claus Conservatoire and here you also find the book of condolence. There is also an online version on

Positive energy, happy, passionate, loving, committed, she will always be with us in our hearts and our music.
