Family Health and Family Care

NEW IN 2019!

Although healthcare professionals are important in caring for young families as well as the elderly, informal carers such as partners, family and neighbours or volunteers are providing most of the care to people in their day-to-day life. Informal carers are therefore the most important partners to collaborate with in the care for patients and families.

Developments in health care

In 2050 half of the population in Europe will be aged 50 years or over and at the same time the number of 15-64 year olds will decrease substantially. These demographic changes put enormous pressure on the health care systems in terms of costs and available workforce. A transition in health care through policy is taking place leading to prioritization on prevention, support for young adults and families, shortening of hospitalization, early discharge, and facilitating home care for the elderly so that they can live in their own homes as long as possible.

In line with these developments there is a growing awareness that care and support provided by family and volunteers is increasingly important for providing the necessary care needs of patients and families living with health issues. Health care policies more and more emphasize the importance of patient's and families' own responsibility for health by self-care, self-management and the participation of family members and other informal carers in care. Healthcare professionals subsequently need to make the shift from a patient-focused approach to a family focused approach including family and informal carers as part of the care team and as 'clients' that may need support too.
