Institutional Accreditation
Unlike in many countries, accreditation in the Netherlands does not take place at the level of the higher education institutions, but at programme level. However, higher education institutions in the Netherlands have the option to undergo an institutional audit. Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen (Hanze UAS) was one of the first higher education institutions in the Netherlands to choose to undergo such an institutional audit and to receive a positive assessment of the institution's quality assurance system. The most recent institutional audit was completed in February 2018 and is valid until 8 May 2024.

Programme Accreditation
All individual degree programmes are subject to accreditation. New programmes have to be accredited before they are launched (initial accreditation). After a programme has been recognised, it has to undergo an accreditation procedure every six years (accreditation).

Degree programmes offered by Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences are accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). For detailed information on the accreditation procedures, see the NVAO website (note: this page is in Dutch).

The accreditation procedure consists of three consecutive steps: the self evaluation, the external assessment and the accreditation.

  1. Self evaluation
The first step in the accreditation procedure is the self evaluation. The self-evaluation report contains a description and evaluation of the programme and indicates and substantiates the level and orientation of the programme.
  2. External assessment
The second step in the accreditation procedure is the external assessment by a panel of experts. The external assessment focuses on learning outcomes. The panel writes down their (objective) findings, (subjective) considerations and conclusions in their assessment report.
  3. Accreditation
The institution submits an application for accreditation of a programme to NVAO. NVAO uses the evaluation criteria in the accreditation framework to evaluate the assessment report and the overall conclusions expressed in it. Subsequently, NVAO takes an accreditation decision and lays down its findings in an accreditation report.

All Bachelor and Master programmes of Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen have been accredited.

Quality Management
Hanze UAS's Quality Management Framework describes the institution's vision on quality and its quality management system. It is a guide for the schools of Hanze UAS for drawing up their own quality management systems. Having a framework for quality assurance and management is a requirement for accreditation, but it is also a prerequisite for maintaining good quality in higher professional education. See the Quality Management Framework for more information.
