Bart de Zwart is professor of Real Estate. Within his professorship, he researches future-proof real estate in a societal context.
Examples include vibrant city centres and villages, liveable neighbourhoods, thriving business and innovation areas, creative hubs, adaptive reuse of heritage, sustainable area development and placemaking. Within these research topics, several recurring themes can be identified:
-
Transformation and sustainability of the existing building stock
-
Area-based and integrated approaches
-
Multiple value creation (economic, social, cultural, spatial)
-
Active roles for end users and the surrounding community
-
Attention to inclusivity and ethics
Bart is a bridge builder between research, practice and education. Through inspiring projects, he challenges researcher-lecturers, professionals and students to engage in applied research and create regional impact together. His philosophy is that real estate is about people, not about buildings.
