dr. Elles Bulder

Elles Bulder is professor of Living Environment in Transition. Her research focuses on the living environment in the Northern Netherlands and the changes taking place there. Examples include demographic developments, sustainable energy projects, area expansion and the effects of earthquakes, such as reinforcement or new construction.

The causes and consequences of these changes affect the (perceived) liveability and regional development. Questions addressed within the professorship include:

  • What determines whether we experience a living environment as healthy and safe?

  • Which facilities are crucial for liveability in villages?

  • How do current demographic developments influence liveability?

  • What is characteristic heritage and what role does it play in place attachment and appreciation of the living environment?

Together with residents, entrepreneurs, organisations, governments and the other professorships within the Research Centre for Built Environment NoorderRuimte, innovative, integrated and interdisciplinary answers are sought to the issues currently relevant to the northern region.
