Karolien Dons is Professor of Music in Context within the Research Centre Art & Society at Hanze University of Applied Sciences.
Dr. Karolien Dons is professor Music in Context at the Research Centre Art & Society. A musicologist by background, Karolien’s expertise lies in the field of innovative music practices in societal contexts. Themes that feature prominently in Karolien’s recent research activities include participatory art processes, engaged musicianship, and ethical issues such as inclusion and autonomy.
Karolien was previously involved with the professorship Lifelong Learning in Music, where she contributed to numerous research and innovation projects, as a researcher and project leader, including Music and Dementia, Music in the Odensehuis, Meaningful Music in Healthcare (MiMiC), and Professional Excellence in Meaningful Music in Healthcare (ProMiMiC).

She studied musicology at Ghent University and music psychology at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland). Karolien obtained her PhD from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama (London) with an ethnographic study on facilitating co-creative musicking with vulnerable older adults.
