Dr. Wendy Gers

Wendy Gers is Professor of Art & Sustainability within the Research Centre Art & Society at Hanze University of Applied Sciences.

Wendy Gers is a researcher, curator and advisor. Her research interests include sustainability, decolonisation and curatorial studies. 

Through the professorship Art & Sustainability, Wendy explores the multifaceted theme of sustainability from a variety of scientific, artistic and experimental perspectives. She investigates how artists and communities can contribute together to climate justice and the development of regenerative artistic practices and economies.

Wendy’s career reflects a strong commitment to social and environmental justice. At Art & Sustainability, she will initially focus on the research themes Ecology and Materials. In the early stages, she will concentrate on expanding both the internal and external network, and on further developing the research portfolio. 

In addition to her role as Professor of Art & Sustainability, she is curator of modern and contemporary art at the National Ceramics Museum Princessehof. Prior to her appointment as professor, she worked as a senior researcher at the Research Centre Biobased Economy, and in autumn 2024, she held the Theodore Randall International Chair of Art History at Alfred University in New York. She has also taught at several universities and art academies, including the University of Groningen, King’s College London, and the École Nationale Supérieure d'Art et de Design de Limoges.  

She holds a PhD from the University of Sunderland, an MA in Art History, an Advanced University Diploma in Information Science, and a BA from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. She completed her postdoctoral research at Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa.
