Marloes Moed

Marloes Moed is a senior lecturer-researcher, as well as a legal expert, and is affiliated with the professorship Transition towards a Circular Economy of the Research Centre Biobased Economy. Marloes' expertise lies at the intersection of sustainability, circularity and law. She focuses on the legal challenges and opportunities that arise during the transition from a linear to a circular economy.

Within her research line Sustainability, circularity and law, Marloes examines how national and European legislation can both hinder and enable circular practices. Much of today’s legislation is still based on a linear economic model, which can create barriers for organisations seeking to operate in a circular fashion.

Working with partners in the Netherlands and abroad, she contributes to identifying legal barriers and exploring potential solutions. At the same time, she aims to translate research outcomes into practice by informing companies and organisations about the legal opportunities that current legislation already provides. Furthermore, Marloes actively participates in various (inter)national research projects and consortia and has supervised numerous student projects.

Sectors and legal focus

Her work covers several economic sectors, including construction, textiles, biobased plastics, and the food sector (e.g. the protein transition). In addition, her legal focus areas include environmental law, waste law, and consumer law, as well as the development and implementation of new European legislation such as the Circular Economy Act and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).

Collaboration

Collaboration is at the heart of Marloes’ work. She enjoys working not only with fellow legal experts but also across disciplines, combining different fields of expertise to tackle complex sustainability challenges. Marloes is actively involved in (inter)national research consortia and warmly welcomes new collaborations with governments, businesses, and knowledge institutions that aim to strengthen the legal foundation for a circular and sustainable economy.
