Sailing Through Limbo: Adrift
- Student project
What if you woke up somewhere between life and death, with no way back to the life you knew? That’s the idea behind the game Adrift, created by a multidisciplinary group of students from Creative Media & Game Technologies.
Adrift combines storytelling, exploration, puzzle solving, and astronomy to tell a story about loss, acceptance, and coming to terms with an unfinished life. In Adrift, players take on the role of a young astrophysics student who awakens on a mysterious tropical archipelago after a fatal accident. Believing there may still be a way to escape his fate, he sets out across the islands, searching for fragments of his past and uncovering the memories hidden within them.
Each island is inspired by one of the stages of grief, turning the journey into both a physical and emotional exploration. Players solve puzzles, discover stories, and piece together the events of the protagonist’s life while being guided by a mysterious creature that always seems to remain just out of sight.
The journey also puts exploration at the heart of the experience. Players must navigate the wind and waves, using an astrolabe and the stars to chart their course and uncover hidden constellations and celestial secrets.
