'I wanted to do this master for several years.'
- Student stories
Roman Felix (27) is currently pursuing the Master’s in Sustainable Energy at Hanze University of Applied Sciences. His passion for engineering began during his bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, after which he deliberately chose a master’s focused on sustainable energy.
“Even during my bachelor’s, I was eager to start this master’s. I felt there was more I could achieve and wanted to see how far I could go. Sustainable energy also fascinates me — it’s the future, and there’s still so much to be done in this field. Previously, I worked at a metalworking company. It was interesting to see how products are made, but I realised that I’m more interested in systems. How do you make a house more sustainable? How do you make the most of solar energy? Questions like these are much more exciting and rewarding for me to work on.
Choosing this master’s at Hanze was therefore an easy decision. I did look at other programmes, but this specific master’s is only offered here. I was also already familiar with Hanze and knew it was a great university.
What I find especially valuable about the master’s is that it develops you not only technically but also socially. Collaboration is a big part of the programme, but there’s also plenty of space to work independently. You are given a project challenge and the freedom to decide how to tackle it. That can be demanding, but it teaches you to solve problems creatively.
I enjoy working independently, but I also appreciate having someone I can turn to with questions or ideas. My supervisor plays an important role in this — I can always reach out to discuss my project. That gives me confidence and helps me get the most out of my work.
The first months of the master’s demand full commitment, but if you stay on top of everything, you build a strong foundation that benefits you throughout the rest of the programme. It’s an intensive course, but one where you learn a tremendous amount.''
