Our living environment is the place where you live, work, relax, give and receive care. Where do you feel at home — and where not? Why do you choose to stay somewhere, or decide to leave? The professorship of Living Environment in Transition studies the living environment in the Northern Netherlands: what makes it valuable and meaningful for its residents?
Our living environment
Various spatial developments influence our living environment and, with that, the perceived livability. Think of demographic changes, the installation of wind turbines and solar parks, the expansion of nature or industrial areas, and the consequences of earthquakes such as reinforcement, demolition, or new construction.
Liveability and broad prosperity
Every change in the living environment affects liveability. Investments, or the lack thereof, directly impact people’s broad prosperity: the overall quality of life, here, elsewhere, now and in the future.
Research with impact
Through our research, which always starts from a practical question, we examine which investments in livability can strengthen the broad prosperity of people in the Northern Netherlands. We do this from the perspective of residents and also involve vulnerable groups and the ecosystem.
Working together on livability
We don't face this challenge alone. We work together with residents, entrepreneurs, organizations, and governments. Wherever possible, we also give a voice to nature in our research.
