Riya Varghese student Master International Communication

Riya is a student of the Master International Communication. For her this master is not just a degree. It is a stepping stone towards levelling up her career in an ever-changing global industry.

‘Choosing the Master's International Communication (MIC) felt like a very intentional step in my academic and professional journey. With a background in Communications and a strong interest in global media, I wanted a programme that combined strategic thinking, real-world application and an international classroom environment. MIC stood out to me for its focus on crisis communication, corporate reputation and global communication dynamics, all areas that are becoming increasingly relevant in today’s interconnected world.’

Intellectually challenging and practically engaging

‘My master’s programme has been both intellectually challenging and practically engaging. Applying theory to real companies has made the learning experience feel both relevant and career-oriented. One of the aspects I value most about MIC is the diversity within the classroom. Studying alongside peers from different cultural and professional backgrounds constantly challenges my assumptions and broadens my perspective. Discussions often extend beyond the slides, and I have learnt that international communication is not just about strategy, but also about cultural sensitivity, listening and adaptability. As an international student myself, this environment feels highly empowering.’

High expectations

‘At the same time the academic expectations are high, especially regarding critical thinking and applying theoretical models thoroughly. Balancing group work, independent research and deadlines requires strong time management. However, I see this as preparation for professional life, where strategic thinking under pressure is essential.’

Future ambitions

‘Looking ahead, I aim to build a career in corporate communication and consulting, ideally within multinational organisations. I am particularly interested in how companies manage reputation, stakeholder trust, and digital visibility in complex global environments. The master’s programme is helping me develop not only analytical skills but also the strategic mindset required to navigate these spaces confidently.’

Be intentional about your goals

‘For prospective students, my biggest advice would be to come with curiosity and a willingness to find comfort in discomfort. Engage actively in discussions, take initiative in group projects, and connect theory to industries you are personally interested in. The more intentional you are about your goals, the more you will gain from the programme.’
