'Working in international teams has taught me a lot about different perspectives'

During his bachelor’s, Pieter found himself most interested in how companies present themselves, tell their stories, and connect with people across cultures. At the same time, he realized he lacked the practical experience and deeper knowledge to enter the field confidently, which led him to the Master’s in International Communication.

‘What initially attracted me to the programme was how practical and dynamic it sounded. Instead of focusing only on theory, the master’s is structured around different professional roles within communication.

Taking on different roles

In the first year, you step into roles such as Corporate Communication Consultant, Strategic Brand Manager, Issues and Crisis Communication Strategist, and Behavioural Change Facilitator. Each block focuses on a different perspective, allowing you to explore the field from multiple angles and develop a broad set of skills. I enjoy that variety because it keeps the programme interesting and helps you discover which parts of communication suit you best. 

Working with actual brands

One of my favourite parts of the programme is working on projects with real organisations. Instead of only working with theoretical cases, we often develop communication strategies for actual brands. Projects like these make the learning experience feel very real. You collaborate with teammates, research audiences, and develop creative but strategic solutions to communication challenges. 

How culture influences communication

Another aspect I really appreciate is the international environment. Students come from different cultural backgrounds, which makes collaboration both interesting and sometimes challenging. Working in international teams has taught me a lot about different perspectives and communication styles. Courses such as Intercultural Communication also help you understand how culture influences the way people communicate and work together, which feels very relevant in today’s globalising world.

If I could give one piece of advice to prospective students, it would be to think about what excites you about communication. This programme is ideal if you are curious about how organisations build their reputation, tell their stories and communicate across cultures.
