Designing and producing circular textiles
- Research project
The textile sector (clothing and household textiles) has the largest environmental impact worldwide, after food, housing, and transport. Reusing textiles saves a large amount of CO2, water, and energy. Through the DreamWeaveFactory project, circular textiles are designed and produced on an industrial pilot scale. This is done using mechanically recycled fibers and based on circular and sustainable design principles, for which new business models are being developed.
The new circular textile products are designed based on circularly inspired design principles, such as CIRCO. Designers are then given the opportunity to prototype these designs using recycled yarns by weaving, knitting, tufting, and optionally plant-dyeing them. In addition, industrial weaving and tufting machines are available, enabling designers and participating SMEs to produce the sustainable designs on a larger scale and in series.
DreamWeaveFactory is co-financed by Taskforce for Applied Research SIA.
