About this minor

Core programme

The teaching staff of the Academy is organised in a so-called community of learners, the production house.  A learning environment is where, through presentations, reflection, research, debate, guest lessons and excursions, the student develops knowledge that can be applied in the project's execution. The student will focus on R&D (artistic research) entrepreneurship and project coaching (organisation).

In addition, every student will work in two different Labs from the point of view of a professional role from which he/she/them will approach the project.  Each student works on different roles: Writer/composer songwriting, Writer/composer production, Performer or Designer/visualiser graphics or Designer/visualiser time based media. In the labs the focus is on making and experimenting.

Core task Advanced
Each semester focuses on 2 Core Task Advanced modules. The autumn semester focuses on Core Task Advanced 1 and 2. The Spring semester focuses on Core Task Advanced 3 and 4. These modules are more theoretical based.

(AUTUMN) Core Task Advanced 1 (Vision development and concepting) In this course you will learn what a creative concept is, look for good examples of creative concepts and develop a unique concept yourself, which you will develop into a working prototype in experiments.

(AUTUMN) Core Task Advanced 2 (Pop culture as a phenomenon) In this course you will research the history and actuality of pop culture. Different perspectives on pop culture will be highlighted. Subcultures, and specific movements will be examined.

(SPRING) Core Task Advanced 3 (Artistic entrepreneurship) In this course you will study characteristics of the creative sector, engage in topics such as communication and marketing and occupy yourself with the positioning of your own artistic practice. In this way you develop professional products that are relevant to the artistic entrepreneur.

(SPRING) Core Task Advanced 4 (Sound, visuals and media) In this course you will examine performance in its broadest sense. You will watch and analyse three interdisciplinary performances. You will also create a podcast on the theme of interdisciplinarity.

OffCourse (AUTUMN and SPRING)
Within the offer of the off courses of Academy Minerva, the student chooses a module of  choice. The offer ranges from theoretical content modules to practical hands-on modules that are focused on making.

Realised projects (some examples)
Recording and producing a CD, organising a band contest, developing and performing an artistic concept for a band contest, making a videoclip for a band, the organisation of a festival, doing research on the application of music at therapeutic sessions, developing a workshop for young people with behavioural problems,  developing a concept for a magazine and production (design and text).

Before you can start

Admission requirements

After you have applied you will receive an invitation for an online interview. We would also like to receive a proposal for a possible project in advance. In the interview we will focus on your motivation regarding the minor and we will discuss the plans for your project.

Examination

For the Minor are 30 EC achievable. At the Academy of Popular Culture, we don't work with grades.  The core task is either sufficient or insufficient.  During the process, the student receives formative (developmental) feedback and at the end a summary portfolio assessment for the production house and lab classes.  The student creates a portfolio in which professional products per core task are provided, a process description and a reflection on the artistic development.  The advanced coretasks and the off course will be reviewed by the instructors at the end of the semester.
