‘I’m ready to contribute to the global energy transition'
- Student stories
After completing his bachelor’s in Renewable Energy at TH Köln and gaining experience as a project manager in the energy sector, Lucas Mandl-Ehmann (28) from Germany decided to pursue a master’s degree at Hanze.
'Originally, during most of my bachelor’s degree, I never felt like I wanted to do a master’s degree. Because I always enjoyed applied work, where the goal is somewhat tangible and you have to weigh different interdisciplinary aspects against each other.
My journey began with a bachelor in Renewable Energy and hands-on experience managing solar PV, heat pumps, and charging infrastructure projects. I’m currently pursuing a Master in Sustainable Energy at Hanze, where I’m working on my thesis exploring practical solutions for the energy transition.
Working in the field showed me how complex the shift to sustainable energy really is. That’s why I chose Hanze: a programme that combines practical, multidisciplinary learning with international exposure, giving me the tools to tackle real-world energy challenges.
During this master, I’ve learnt to think in systems considering technical, environmental, social and economic aspects all at once and to work effectively with diverse teams. Projects with organisations like the New Energy Coalition, have allowed me to turn theory into solutions that are both practical and impactful.
Beyond the technical skills, this programme has been transformative personally. Living in Groningen, collaborating with peers from all over the world, and seeing the tangible results of our projects has boosted my confidence and shaped my professional outlook. I now feel prepared to make a meaningful contribution to the global energy transition.
For ‘problem-solving’ people passionate about sustainable energy, Hanze University of Applied Sciences offers an unmatched opportunity: hands-on learning, international perspectives, and a vibrant city to explore while preparing for a future that truly makes a difference.'
