Merged Frames: drawing for the consultation room
- Research project
The research project ‘Merged Frames: drawing for the consultation room’ explores the influence of drawings on shared decision-making in medical consultations. Short pilots are being carried out at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), Radboudumc and St. Antonius Hospital.
In consultations the focus is often on treatment of a specific part of the body, while the patient’s lived experience tends to remain unaddressed. Since visuals (visual aids) can provide support in reflecting on the situation someone is in and the perspective they have on it, Marjolein Uitham – illustrator, art teacher, researcher and expert by experience as a patient – investigates how ‘live’ drawing and illustrations can mediate in the conversation and improve communication between doctor and patient.
In this project, the doctor and patient prepare together with an illustrator before the consultation. The patient develops a drawing with the illustrator that visualises their perspective and lived experience. The doctor learns how to respond to the illustration, either verbally or by drawing.
The project then examines whether and how such an artistic intervention can, within the limited time of a consultation, create more space for the patient’s personal situation and experiences, and thereby support shared decision-making.
