Engaged learning: studying with impact

Climate, health and digitisation are all examples of subjects that are constantly making headlines. Are you curious about how these issues may be involved in your studies and how you can make a difference? At Hanze, you can get started with these issues straight away and work on concrete solutions to problems that affect us all, i.e. participate in 'engaged learning'.

Studying with impact

We facilitate engaged learning by focusing on your talent and interests. We help you to discover and develop your talents and apply them to issues that affect you. Although we Northerners are pretty down-to-earth and not quick to blow our own trumpet, we can say with full confidence that our approach is unique.

During your studies at Hanze, you can contribute to impactful projects: regional, national or global, and general or specific in nature. Engaged learning offers immense benefits: you discover new talents, you apply your knowledge in practice immediately, you learn what works and what doesn't work and others learn from you. You also add value to the professional field by creating real-world solutions. This is what we mean by engaged learning: commitment, collaboration and connection.

The 4 pillars of engaged learning

Working together to make an impact on Groningen and the world around us

1. Together

Collaboration on real-world issues is the key focus. You work together with students from your own programme and other programmes as well as lecturers, researchers, professionals from the business sector and society as a whole. By combining knowledge from a variety of fields and showing interest in each other's ideas, you can create optimum solutions to major issues.

2. Impact

At Hanze, your education and research will be closely interwoven with society as we believe that students can make meaningful contributions to the world during their studies. You will complete relevant individual and team assignments and seek solutions to challenges facing our society. These solutions will help the local area and sometimes their impact can even resonate around the world.

3. Innovation

Innovation, education and professional practice are brought together via Living Labs: hotspots for issues such as entrepreneurship, energy and healthy ageing. We have already set up over 100 Living Labs, and the number grows every year. Our Living Labs serve as an excellent starting point for start-ups, with more than 350 Hanze students setting up their own business every year with our help.

4. Groningen

For centuries, Groningen – a dynamic, international city and province with vibrant and innovative businesses – has been the perfect spot for students and entrepreneurs. The city is a thriving hub of collaboration, innovation and growth, fuelled by a substantial inflow of national and international students.

What do our students work on?

The transition to sustainable energy, the development of earthquake-proof buildings, maintaining quality of life in villages undergoing depopulation, new malaria medications, participation in a collective of young innovative entrepreneurs, using lupin as a sustainable source of food, using music to aid memory in dementia patients, creating a business plan for an SME and setting up the first team from the Northern Netherlands to participate in the solar race in Australia in order to devise new sustainable mobility solutions. You needn't look far: our study programmes are brimming with exciting and engaging projects like these. Check out our students' current projects below.
