“I wanted to explore the world behind sport”
- Student stories
Tim chose Sport Studies because he wanted to combine his interest in sport with management and leadership. Having grown up in Germany, he was drawn to studying in the Netherlands in an international, English-taught environment. Through projects and collaboration, he has developed both professionally and personally.
Sport connects people worldwide
My motivation to study Sport Studies was strongly connected to the values that sport represents and the way it brings people together internationally. I find that global connection within sport very inspiring. I was also interested in management and leadership, and this programme allowed me to combine those interests.
I liked the idea of studying in my home country, the Netherlands, after growing up in Germany. The fact that the programme is taught in English and has a practical approach really appealed to me.
Connecting theory and practice
In general, I like the balance between theory and practice. Some practical experiences are replaced by case studies due to limited funding, which can be a bit disappointing.
Still, I have applied theory in several projects. For example, I helped organise fundraiser runs in Groningen and Hamburg. I also created a large New Year’s event at a gym in Groningen that was connected to a fundraising initiative.
Considering different stakeholders
One important thing I learned during these projects is how many different stakeholders are involved in the sport management world. It is important to consider all of them when organising or managing a project. That is something that has really stayed with me.
Learning in an international environment
It is an interesting environment to study in, with lecturers who have diverse and valuable professional backgrounds. I also really value the international group of fellow students. It makes collaboration and discussions more dynamic, because you work with people who have different perspectives and experiences.
Developing as a professional
Important skills within this study include strong English communication, creativity, spontaneity in generating ideas, leadership and teamwork. Being proactive and able to think creatively is especially valuable in this programme.
Through the programme, I have developed my professional identity, learned about different leadership styles, improved my teamwork skills and become more experienced working in a professional environment.
Sport beyond playing
To someone who is unsure about choosing Sport Studies, I would say that it is a unique type of study. If you have strong intrinsic motivation and an interest in sport beyond just playing, it is definitely an interesting and worthwhile programme to pursue.
I would recommend asking questions that are important to you during open days. It is a different kind of study programme, which is not a negative thing, but it is something you should be aware of before choosing it.
