Ivar Cats started studying International Business at the University of Groningen (RuG) but decided to switch to Hanze after six months. Because he has a Dutch VWO (pre-university) diploma, he can complete the International Business programme in three years instead of four.

'You can study International Business at the University of Groningen and at the Hanze. I really liked the management subjects but the level at the RuG was higher than I expected beforehand. I therefore decided to switch to the Hanze after six months. The fact that I can do this study in three years instead of four helped in my choice.'

'I really like that there is a lot of emphasis on collaboration in the programme, unlike the more independent approach at university. At Hanze UAS, we are placed in groups by lecturers with the assignment: 'figure it out together'. This makes it easier to figure out things you're up against. I am also really looking forward to a year abroad for study and internship. It gives me a chance to see what I want to get out of this study before I complete it.'

'I always felt that a university of applied sciences was a step down. After all, a VWO diploma allows you to go to a research university and that always seemed the most logical thing to do. I only now realise that this is a misconception. On the contrary, it has many advantages; you have more peace of mind than at university, you can still continue studying after your bachelor and you are better prepared.'
