Master Smart Systems Engineering

​Smart systems are increasingly becoming a reality of our everyday life. By 2030, about 500 billion devices are expected to be connected to the Internet. Pinhead seized sensors will be embedded into practically any product, allowing new, smart and powerful applications for areas like energy management and health care. A few examples? Think of helping to optimize the recycling of plastic waste by injecting sensors into bio-chemical reactors, or communicating with plants by interpreting feedback from their miniature embedded sensors. As a Master of Science, specialized in smart systems, you will move way beyond the point of merely generating data, actually being able to understand, analyze and implement these data in real time. You will be working in multidisciplinary teams with fellow students from all over the world, learning from each other's backgrounds and skills. You will discover new and exciting ways to apply intelligent sensor technology, helping to improve the world around us. A dedicated staff of experienced lecturers and professionals from the field will assist you, by teaching you new skills, challenging you to test the boundaries of what you thought could be possible and stimulating you to make the most of your time at our institute.

You will immerse yourself in the challenging fields of health, energy and high-tech systems and materials (HTSM). These sectors demand that you be on top of your game at all times, because the products that you design could impact large numbers of people. Our students come from countries like Indonesia, Bulgaria, The Netherlands, Iran, Nigeria, India, Vietnam, Spain, Portugal and many others. Even our lecturer staff consists of a culturally diverse team, with lecturers coming from as far as Brazil and New-Zealand.

Healthcare, Energy and high-tech systems and materials (HTSM) are three major areas where the innovative application of smart sensors has become increasingly relevant. These developments provide a myriad of opportunities for the next generation of smart sensor specialists. Just think of developing new products and services that involve smart sensor innovations for medical devices, renewable energy systems, domotics or technical smart sensor applications. The scientific research environment is also a great place to put your master skills into practice. Here you will find the opportunity to work alongside scientists who focus on high tech research projects, such as seismic monitoring systems.


SSE is an NVAO​ accredited HBO Master's Programme. After graduation you will receive a Master of Science diploma. More info about the difference between a degree from a university of applied sciences (HBO) – higher professional education – and a research university (WO) can be found at (international students) or (Dutch students).

1. This programme is offered in Assen, just over 30 km away from the main campus in Groningen.  2. The Hanze does not offer on-campus student accomodation. Finding a good, affordable room in Assen (or in Groningen) is a challenge, so make sure you start looking as soon as possible.
