There are a number of ways to finance your studies. Some students are eligible for Dutch Student Finance, others can apply for a tuiton fee loan. There are also various scholarships available, some funded by Hanze UAS and others by the Dutch government. By providing financial support to incoming international students, Hanze UAS and its partners strive to give people all over the world access to higher education.
Ways to finance your studies
There is a national student finance system in the Netherlands for students who are enrolled at a Dutch higher education institution. This loan system is called 'studiefinanciering', i.e. student finance. To be eligible for a loan, you:
- must be a Dutch national or have the same rights (check this with the nationality chart);
- have to be younger than 30.
International students are generally not eligible for such a loan. Only EU/EEA students can make use of student finance, if meeting all of the conditions below:
- You are under the age of 30
- You are registered in full-time or dual education
- You are an EU/EEA national or a Swiss national
- You (or your non-Dutch parent or partner) work in the Netherlands for at least 56 hours per month
If you are not an EU/EEA national you can still apply for student finance if you have a residence permit (type II, III or IV).
Student finance consists of four components: a basic loan, a supplementary grant, a student travel product (travel for free or at reduced rates on public transport), and a possible tuition fee loan. Students can apply for a basic loan and supplementary grant, together totalling to a maximum of €1,016 per month. The grant depends on parental income and has a maximum of €378. This supplementary grant is converted into a gift if you graduate within ten years.
In order to apply for student finance, you must have a citizen service number (social security number), in Dutch 'burgerservicenummer' or 'BSN'. You will automatically receive one when you register with the Dutch municipality.
The authority responsible for this grant is the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO). We always try to provide you with the correct information on the conditions for obtaining the grant. However, no rights can be derived from the information given here. More information about 'studiefinanciering' for EU/EEA-students is available on the DUO website.
If you are not eligible for Dutch student finance and you are a national of one of the countries which belong to the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) or you are from Switzerland, you may apply for a 'tuition fee loan' to pay your tuition fees (in Dutch: 'collegegeldkrediet'). There are conditions for the tuition fee loan.
The authority responsible for this loan is DUO, the Dutch organization that is responsible for student loans and grants. We try to provide you with the correct information on the conditions for obtaining the grant. However, no rights can be derived from the information given here. DUO provides information in English on the DUO website. We advise you to check the site regularly for up-to-date information.
Important! You always have to pay back the tuition fee loan, even if you do not finish your course or if you leave the Netherlands!
The Hanze Scholarship programme offers scholarships to master's students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who want to pursue their master's degree at Hanze UAS, Groningen. The scholarship is a contribution towards the costs of living in the Netherlands and is, in principle, awarded for the nominal duration of the programme.
Requirements
- Your nationality is non-EEA.
- You are admitted to one of these full-time Master programmes, starting September 2024:
- Master in Fine Art and Design:
- Master International Communication
- Master of Music:
- Master Smart Systems Engineering
- MSc in Business Studies - Interdisciplinary Business Professional
- Master in International Business and Management
- You have to study at Hanze UAS and actively participate in classes and all projects.
- Please note that programmes may set specific requirements, you can find these on the programme pages (see above).
Application Procedure
- Application for the Hanze Scholarship is open from 1 March up to and including 31 May 2024.
- If you wish to be eligible for the scholarship you first have to be admitted to the programme itself. For information on how to get enrolled please see Application and enrolment.
- Admitted students will receive an invitation to apply for the scholarship and a link to the Hanze Scholarship application form from the programme's admissions officer.
- You will be informed about the result of our selection on 12 July 2024 at the latest.
- Further practical information concerning acceptance of the scholarship, procedure and payment will be sent to you after selection.
Amount and payment
- The Hanze Scholarship amounts to € 10,000 per academic year. Selected students will receive the scholarship in monthly allowances of € 1,000.
- The Hanze Scholarship is a contribution towards to costs of living and cannot be used to reduce the tuition fee. However, a grant letter stating the amount of the scholarship can be used to reduce the total amount of the financial guarantee.

Hanze Scholarships are, in principle, awarded for the nominal duration of the programme. Upon sufficient study progress students who are awarded a Hanze Scholarship for the academic year 2023-2024 and are enrolled in a 1,5 or two-year programme will be given the opportunity to apply for a Hanze Scholarship 2024-2025 for the second year of their studies at Hanze UAS. Information about applying for the second year Hanze Scholarship 2024-2025 will be sent to you at the end of 2023-2024.
Students of the following programmes can apply for a Hanze Scholarship of € 10,000 (for the second year):

Students of the following programmes can apply for a Hanze Scholarship of € 5,000 (for the third semester):
The Hanze Scholarship programme offers scholarships to bachelor students of Minerva Art Academy from outside the European Economic Area (EEA).The scholarship is a contribution towards the costs of living in the Netherlands and is, in principle, awarded for four years, the nominal duration of the bachelor programme.
Requirements
- Your nationality is non-EEA.
- You are admitted to one of the bachelor programmes of Minerva Art Academy, starting September 2024:
- Design
- Fine Art
- The scholarship is awarded based on motivation and financial need.
Application procedure
- If you wish to be eligible for the scholarship you first have to be admitted to one of the programmes mentioned above. For information on how to get enrolled please see Application and enrolment.
- Once admitted, you will be invited to apply for the Hanze Minerva Scholarship and you will receive an email from our Admissions Office with application instructions.
- The Hanze Minerva Scholarship is only awarded from the first year of the programme and, in principle, for the nominal duration of the programme: four years.
- You will be asked to write a motivation letter, including a budget in which you outline the planned finance of the study programme.
- Further practical information concerning acceptance of the scholarship, procedure and payment will be sent to you by e-mail after selection.
- Deadline for application for the scholarship is 1 June 2024.
Amount and payment
- The amount of the Hanze Minerva Scholarship amounts to € 2,500 per academic year.
- The scholarship consists of one payment per academic year which selected students will receive at the end of November 2024.
- The Hanze Minerva Scholarship is a contribution towards the costs of living and cannot be used to reduce the tuition fee.

The Hanze Scholarship programme offers tailor-made scholarships to students of the Prince Claus Conservatoire from outside the European Economic Area (EEA).The scholarship is a contribution towards to costs of living in the Netherlands and is awarded for one year.
Requirements
- Your nationality is non-EEA.
- You are admitted to one or enrolled in one of the bachelor or master programmes of the Prince Claus Conservatoire.

The NL Scholarship (for incoming students) is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen. The scholarship is a contribution towards the costs of study. The NL Scholarship at Hanze UAS is for talented international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who want to obtain their master's degree at our university.

Upon sufficient study progress students who are awarded an NL Scholarship for the academic year 2023-2024 and are enrolled in a 1,5 or two-year programme will be given the opportunity to apply for a Hanze Scholarship 2024-2025 for the second year of their studies at Hanze UAS. Information about applying for the second year Hanze Scholarship 2024-2025 after an NL Scholarship will be sent to you at the end of 2023-2024.
