Programme structure

Programme structure

The IB four-year bachelor is an English-taught programme. Each year consists of two study semesters and four 10-week blocks. The programme consists of 240 European Credits (ECTS), with 60 ECTS earned per year. In order to be allowed to continue with the second year of the programme, students are required to finish the first year with a minimum of 48 ECTS.

Learning by doing

In addition to lectures and classes, students work together in small groups in order to find answers to challenging, yet practical, business-related problems. Group work prepares you for effective communication and cooperation in international business. Training is also provided in specific skills essential to successful future careers, such as giving and receiving feedback, presentation skills, intercultural proficiency and languages. At IBS, we take a 'learning by doing' approach. Together with individual coaching, this sets us apart from international business programmes at research universities.

First year

The first year

The first year introduces you to international business essentials and business skills. You will explore how the changing business environment affects international business and how they respond to these changes. In addition, you delve into the internal dynamics of a business and try to understand how the business works from the perspective of organizational management, finance, operations, HR and marketing. You will gain hands-on experience by doing integrated projects. For example, you learn how to write a real business plan. Besides theoretical knowledge and project work, you will also work on your professional skills, international business communication and learning a second language. You can choose between Spanish, German, French or Dutch (for non-Dutch students). Depending on the number of applications, it is also possible to study Mandarin Chinese.

Second year

The second year

In the second year, you will be doing a project in each of the four blocks. You will learn the ins and outs of the Scrum project management method. The projects will deal with Human Resources (Talent Management), Finance (Balanced Score Card), Operations & Logistics, and Marketing (Market Entry). This gives you the opportunity to find solutions for real companies. The language classes and Professional Skills Development courses you started with in your first year will continue in year 2.

Third year: abroad

Study abroad

During the third year, you spend a full semester studying at one of our many partner universities around the world. We have more than 100 partner institutions all over the globe: Argentina, Australia, Curaçao, Finland, Hong Kong, Peru, Taiwan, United States; you could end up anywhere! This is a unique opportunity to expand your knowledge of different cultures and develop your language skills. Non-Dutch students have the possibility to stay in the Netherlands and follow a minor (elective semester) at IBS or a minor from another Hanze UAS school.

International placement

The other semester is spent working in an internationally oriented company or organisation outside your home country, where you can apply what you have learnt during the first phase of your study.  Our students complete placements at top global companies, such as Hugo Boss in New York, Microsoft in Dublin, SEAT in Barcelona, Bosch in Mexico City, PwC in Hong Kong and Philips in Amsterdam, as well as at exciting SMEs and startups. Every student is assigned an internship supervisor who can guide and help you if you need advice.

Fourth year

Graduation minor

You begin your fourth and final year with a semester in which you take modules relating to your minor. This enables you to gain an in-depth understanding of the specialisation you have chosen. You can choose out of four graduation minors in the IB programme:

Graduation project

In your final semester you complete a graduation project in which you are regarded as a consultant for an external company. You will be required to obtain, define, analyse and research a business-related problem, write a final report and present/defend your findings in an oral presentation.

Academic Advisor

Academic Advisor

IBS offers valuable study mentoring throughout all phases of the IB programme. Each student is assigned a dedicated Academic Advisor during the  introduction period. In the first year, academic advice concentrates on following study progress and assists you in adjusting to the IB programme and higher education in general. In the second and subsequent years, the Academic Advisor continues to monitor study progress. You will also get expert support when writing your study plan, as well as help and guidance in other student matters.

Learn a second language

Learn a second language

Starting in your first year, you will learn a second language, such as Spanish, German, French or Dutch. Depending on the number of applications, it is also possible to study Mandarin Chinese. Learning a second language will give you a head start when it comes to applying communication skills within your future career.

Please note that all our language classes start at level zero. At the end of year 1 you will have reached level A2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference and at the end of year 2 your skills will be at level B1. For more information and to find out what exactly you will learn in each of the languages, please check the IBS language guide.
