Within the rapidly expanding European renewable energy industry, an urgent demand exists for more post-graduate trained staff specialised in renewable energy technology. Together with leading European Universities, EUREC has developed the European Master in Renewable Energy. Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen (Hanze UAS), became member of the EUREC consortium and started this master programme in September 2012.

The aim of the European Master in Renewable Energy is to train post-graduate students to fill the gap between the growing industry demand for specialised renewable energy expertise and the skills currently available on the job market.


Structure of the programme

​​​The master programme will take 3 semesters and starts in the first week of September. The 16-month programme is divided into three semesters: the core semester, the specialisation and the thesis project. Each semester has a full-time study load of 30 ECTS credits, so 90 ECTS for the complete programme.

Semster 1 - Core

During the core semester, you acquire a solid foundation in the technical and engineering aspects related to innovative energy system design and implementation and their various related interdisciplinary aspects. For the core you can choose one of the following universities:

Semester 2 - Specialisation

The second semester will give you the opportunity to specialise in a chosen technology. For the specialisation you can choose one of the following universities:


Unique approach of the programme

The unique approach of the European Master in Renewable Energy combines the following aspects:


  • International approach: the student mix is international and students spend at least one semester at a partner university in Europe.
  • Latest concepts and models: The programme focuses on the fundamental technical aspects of energy transition and the overall energy system.
  • Scientific approach: this is a Master of Science where advanced conceptual thinking and analysis are fundamental. The master has an extensive academic base as well as an open testing facility (EnTranCe).


  • Multidisciplinary and systems perspective: throughout the course there is a consistent emphasis on renewable energy (systems) and their role in the energy system.
  • Quantitative methods and techniques: advanced modelling, simulation and various statistical and econometric assessment techniques are essential elements throughout the course.
  • Unique approach and proven performance: the master is the start of a promising energy career, rated as TOP programme in the Netherlands.
  • Interactive teaching methods with a strong focus on coaching, discussion, presentation and group work. The teaching staff not only have profound academic backgrounds but most of them also have professional experience within the energy sector. You will be surrounded by real energy experts.

Core qualities and skills

  • Knowledge of different renewable energy sources and basic understanding of issues in energy strategy and politics at different levels of integration (local, regional, national, global).
  • Integration of knowledge and skills with technological, strategic, social and economic issues.
  • Specialisation in one particular technology.
  • Skills in analytical and research methodology relevant for current and future renewable energy sources.
  • Ability to work effectively in project teams, and to communicate effectively in a range of complex environments.
  • Ability to learn independently and is capable of self-assessment.



Hanze University of Applied Sciences (Hanze UAS) is a member of the Association of European Renewable Energy Research Centres (EUREC), a consortium of 45 leading universities and research centers. The mission of EUREC is to improve the quality and scope of European research and development in renewable energy technologies. The association promotes and supports the development of innovative technologies and human recourses to enable a prompt transition to a sustainable energy system.



Hanze University of Applied Sciences offers both the European Master in Renewable Energy (EMRE) and the European Master in Sustainable Energy System Management (SESyM). The EMRE en SESyM programmes are complementary to one another. In the table below the commonalities and differences between both masters are visualised.
