About Creative Media and Game Technologies

At Hanze UAS you learn by creating, not by taking exams. In the bachelor Creative Media & Game Technologies (CMGT) you design, build, and test games and interactive media that prepare you for the creative industry and beyond. You turn ideas into prototypes, pitch serious game concepts, develop code for gameplay, and bring art and design to life. Working in teams, you involve real users throughout the process and learn how research, innovation, and entrepreneurship can drive the future of digital experiences.

The programme equips you with the skills, tools, and mindset for a career in the global creative industry. You explore creative design and user experience, work with cutting-edge technologies such as AR/VR, AI, and motion capture, and develop your own applications, assets, and game concepts. Throughout the programme you broaden your skills, deepen your expertise, and shape your study path to match your interests.

Course overview

Year 1

Your first year builds the core skills of game development and creative media across four thematic blocks.

  • Block 1 – Design & Prototyping: create a mixed-media board game about wayfinding, integrating elements such as 3D printing, electronics, and visual design.
  • Block 2 – 2D Game Development: turn your analogue concept into a digital 2D game while focusing on interface and user experience.
  • Block 3 – 3D Games & Assets: build 3D assets and games for real-world cases while exploring game theory and the concept of play.
  • Block 4 – Production & Reflection: refine your prototype into a finished product and evaluate your growth as a game developer.

Year 2

In your second year you expand your toolkit and apply new technologies such as VR, AR, AI, and motion capture to projects for real clients. You also begin to personalise your path.

  • Focus Tracks deepen your core skills.
  • Electives let you branch into specialised topics.

In the second semester you join the Game Lab, where you take on a major project, either your own idea or one from a real client and deliver a polished final product.

Year 3

Your third year takes you into the professional world. You complete an internship at a company of your choice, gaining hands-on industry experience. Alongside this, you can broaden your skills with more electives or spend a semester on a minor, either within Hanze UAS or abroad at one of our partner schools.

Year 4

Your final year is all about independence and impact. In the Innovation Workplace you collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams on a client case, tackling real-world challenges. You continue to shape your expertise through electives and finish your studies with a graduation project. In this capstone project you design, prototype, and iterate on a professional product for a client or sponsor. Whether you work solo or in a small team, this project showcases your unique contribution to the industry.
